We’re already halfway through the year. It’s a good time to pause and reflect, not only on your business goals but also on the health of your practice itself.

Over the past few months, I’ve had a number of conversations with advisers about fees, profitability and the value they deliver to their clients. One thing has stood out to me.

As advisers, you’re there during some of life’s biggest milestones and some of its biggest crises. You help people retire with confidence, support families through the loss of a loved one, guide clients through divorce, disability, illness, protect businesses and provide reassurance during times of uncertainty.

It’s difficult to put a price on the peace of mind you provide.

Yet many advisers find it surprisingly difficult to place the same value on their own business. Conversations around fees can feel uncomfortable and understanding practice profitability often gets pushed aside while you’re focused on looking after everyone else.

The good news is that it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Start by understanding what it truly costs to run your practice. Include everything: your own salary, staff, office expenses, software, compliance and all the other costs of running your business. Then divide that by the number of active clients you serve. Most advisers have never calculated this number, yet it is one of the most important metrics in your business.

Next, understand where your time is being spent.

Which clients generate enough revenue to sustain the level of service you provide? Which clients require significantly more time and resources? Commspace’s Client Segmentation gives you this visibility at a glance, helping you make informed decisions about pricing, service models and the long-term sustainability of your practice.

This isn’t about charging more. It’s about understanding your business well enough to continue delivering exceptional advice for years to come.

Because if you’re helping your clients build financial security and peace of mind, your own business deserves exactly the same care.
